From the Directors:
We are honored to be able to present so many musical friends from all corners of the world and shades of the musical spectrum to our Charlottesville audience. Percussionist Matthew Gold returns for music of Lou Harrison, Frederic Rzewski, and Annie Gosfield; Brooklyn Rider brings its exotic home brew for 21st-century string quartet; flutist Sooyun Kim and soprano Kiera Duffy will join us for Schoenberg’s wild and (extremely) weird Pierrot Lunaire. We are also happy to have two fantastic violinists — James Ehnes and Jennifer Koh — for music of Mendelssohn and Bach, and pianist Benjamin Hochman returns with a sonata from Ludwig van Beethoven.
We will also present our largest outreach program to date, presenting an all-star cast for Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, a beautiful work in its own right and a wonderfully accessible musical introduction for new listeners of all ages. Joining us for this presentation will be pianists Mimi Solomon and Ieva Jokubaviciute, bassist Joseph Conyers, and flutist Angela Kelly…. These events will round out our largest and busiest Festival yet – five series concerts, a free concert, a special Saturday evening event with Brooklyn Rider in an exciting collaboration with Live Arts, as well as school outreach programs.
We are deeply grateful for the support of all the donors, helpers, committee and board members, friends, and family who have helped us to build a tradition of fine chamber music and musical exploration every September in Charlottesville. And we are grateful to the audience members who allow us to come home to Virginia with the finest we can find from our musical world.
